Piran sits on a narrow peninsula at the southern end of Slovenia's 46 km of coast, a walled town of Venetian houses and lanes that funnel down to a marble square and a lighthouse on the point. It belonged to Venice for five centuries and still looks like it. There are no cars inside the walls, no sandy beach, and nothing that needs a ticket to be worth seeing, which makes it the easiest coastal town in the Adriatic to enjoy on foot.

Costs below are given as free, small fee, or ticketed rather than exact amounts, because the town's small sights change their prices each season and the official tourism pages do not publish them.
Things To Do In Piran
Ordered as you meet them from the bus station: the square first, then up the hill, then the point and the water, then the trips out of town.
1. Tartini Square

The oval marble square at the heart of the town, named for the violinist Giuseppe Tartini who was born in the house on its edge. It was the inner harbour until 1894. The Venetian House with its red facade and the neoclassical town hall frame it; every lane in Piran leads back here.
2. Climb the bell tower of St George's

The campanile is a copy of St Mark's in Venice and stands on the ridge above the town. The 146 wooden steps end at the bells with the whole peninsula, the Gulf of Trieste, and on clear days the Alps and Croatia laid out below. The church terrace beside it is the free version of the view.
3. Walk the town walls

Seven towers of the 15th-century walls survive on the hill behind the town. The walkway along the top gives the classic photograph of the red roofs funnelling down to the point, best in the late afternoon. Reach it up the lanes behind St George's.
4. The Punta lighthouse and a swim off the rocks

The peninsula ends in a small lighthouse and the round church of St Clement. The concrete platforms along the seawall on both sides are where locals swim: no sand, ladders into deep clear water, and a few bars with sunbeds. Bring water shoes for the rocks.
5. Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum

In the Gabrielli Palace on the harbour, the museum covers Piran's shipbuilding, salt trade, and the Tartini collection. Its aquarium branch a few doors along is small but a good half hour with children on a wet day.
6. Fiesa beach and the coastal path

The path east from the town walls drops to Fiesa, a pebble cove with a freshwater lake behind it, in about 25 minutes. It is the nearest thing Piran has to a beach and much quieter than the town seawall.
7. Sečovlje salt pans

Salt has been harvested here since the 14th century and still is, by hand, in the same way. The nature park at the mouth of the Dragonja river has flat walking and cycling tracks between the pans, the salt museum, and bird hides. Reach it by the coastal bus toward the Croatian border, or by bike along the Parenzana trail.
8. The Parenzana cycle path

The old narrow-gauge railway from Trieste to Poreč is now a flat cycle trail. From Piran the section through Portorož, the Strunjan cliffs, and on to the salt pans is the best, with tunnels and sea views and no traffic.
9. Seafood on the waterfront

Grilled sea bass, calamari, fried sardines, and the local pasta with truffles or seafood. The waterfront terraces are the setting; the lanes one street back are cheaper for the same catch. Order the house white, a Malvazija from the Istrian hills behind the town.
10. Portorož

The resort next door has the sandy beach, the casino, and the grand hotel. It is the opposite of Piran and worth an hour along the seafront promenade to see the contrast, then a bus back.
Half Day, Day Trip, Or Overnight?
Day trip from Ljubljana
Works from May to September with an early bus. About 2h30 each way, so you have five to six hours in town: the square, the tower, the walls, a swim, and lunch. Check the last bus back before you leave Ljubljana; there are fewer in the evening.
Half day
Only if you are already on the coast or in Koper. The town itself is small enough for two hours, but the journey from Ljubljana makes a half day pointless.
Overnight
The better choice. Piran after the day-trippers leave is quiet, the sunset from the Punta is the reason people come, and a second morning fits the salt pans or the Parenzana. Hotels are limited; book early in summer.
Two nights on the coast
Adds Koper's old town, Izola's harbour, or a bus across the border to Croatian Istria. Piran is the base; the other towns are 20 to 40 minutes away by bus.
Getting there
Direct buses from Ljubljana bus station, about 2h30. No train to Piran; Koper is the nearest station. Parking is outside the walls in the Fornače garage with a shuttle into town.
