How to use it

Choose one route before you start

  1. 1

    Pick by interest

Route 1 for essentials, Route 2 for architecture, or Route 3 for art and green space.

  2. 2

    Read the ordered stops

The text lists below are more useful than the drawing when streets, crossings, or entrances are unclear.

  3. 3

    Open a live street map

Use your preferred navigation service for turn-by-turn directions and current diversions.

  4. 4

    Check the day's anchors

Verify the funicular, museum, guided visit, weather, and any access requirement that matters to you.

Important map note

Distances and times are editorial approximations between suggested stops, not surveyed routes or turn-by-turn navigation. Check a live map, current construction, venue access, weather, and funicular operation before setting out.

1

Self-guided walk

Old Town & Castle Essentials

This is the compact first-visit loop. It joins the central bridges, market, castle, Old Town lanes, and Congress Square without sending you back and forth across the center.

Prešeren Square loop
Distance
About 2.3–2.6 km with the funicular; about 2.8–3.2 km if you walk Castle Hill
Time
2.5–3.5 hours, longer with castle exhibitions or a meal
Best for
First visits, iconic sights, photography, and families using the funicular
Not ideal for
Peak-time crowd avoidance or a hill walk in heavy rain, ice, or unsuitable footwear

Ordered stops

  1. 1

    Prešeren Square

Start at Ljubljana's central meeting point and orient to the river.

  2. 2

    Triple Bridge

Cross Plečnik's three-part bridge sequence into the Old Town.

  3. 3

    Town Hall and Robba Fountain

Walk through Town Square and use the civic buildings as your first Old Town anchor.

  4. 4

    Ljubljana Cathedral

Pause at the exterior and check current visitor access if you want to enter.

  5. 5

    Central Market and Plečnik's colonnade

Browse if stalls are active; otherwise focus on the river-facing architecture.

  6. 6

    Dragon Bridge

Continue east for the city's signature dragon sculptures.

  7. 7

    Lower funicular station

Choose the funicular or a current marked walking path for Castle Hill.

  8. 8

    Ljubljana Castle

Allow time for views and whichever ticketed spaces fit your interests.

  9. 9

    Stari trg lanes

Return to the historic streets; if you used the funicular both ways, rejoin below the hill.

  10. 10

    Cobblers' Bridge

Cross the river again at another Plečnik landmark.

  11. 11

    Congress Square

Use the broad square and Zvezda Park as the final major pause.

  12. 12

    Return to Prešeren Square

Close the loop beside the river and choose a café, meal, or second route.

2

Self-guided walk

Plečnik, Emona & Špica

This southbound route deliberately avoids repeating the classic Old Town loop. It follows layers of Ljubljana—from Roman Emona to Plečnik's civic work and the river landscape at Špica.

Congress Square to Špica (linear)
Distance
About 2.7–3 km one way; walking back toward Old Town adds roughly 1.5 km
Time
1.75–2.5 hours outdoors; 3–4 hours with a museum or Plečnik House visit
Best for
Architecture, UNESCO context, Roman history, and quieter neighborhoods
Not ideal for
Very short visits, heavy rain, or anyone expecting unscheduled access to Plečnik House

Ordered stops

  1. 1

    Congress Square and Zvezda Park

Begin near the center with a clear line toward Ljubljana's south side.

  2. 2

    National and University Library exterior

Study the façade and urban setting; do not assume interior visitor access.

  3. 3

    City Museum

Use the courtyard as a route stop or add the museum as your main indoor visit.

  4. 4

    Križanke and French Revolution Square

Continue through the cultural complex and its surrounding public space.

  5. 5

    Roman Wall at Mirje

Make the short westward detour for the visible remains of Roman Emona.

  6. 6

    Trnovo Bridge

Rejoin Plečnik's city at a bridge designed as a public place.

  7. 7

    Plečnik House

Enter only with a suitable current guided slot; otherwise keep it as an exterior and neighborhood stop.

  8. 8

    Trnovski pristan

Follow the riverbank north-east through a quieter waterside section.

  9. 9

    Špica

Finish where the river divides, then walk back by the river or check a current local transport option.

3

Self-guided walk

Tivoli Art & Green Loop

Use this route as a decompression walk or a half-day art-and-park pairing. It stays on the urban side of Tivoli rather than turning into a hike on Rožnik.

National Gallery loop
Distance
About 2.5–3 km
Time
1.5–2.25 hours outdoors; allow half a day with a gallery
Best for
Green space, art, families, slower mornings, and repeat visits
Not ideal for
Heavy rain, late-night walking, or a first visit that has not yet covered the Old Town

Ordered stops

  1. 1

    National Gallery

Start with an optional indoor art visit or use the building as an easy central landmark.

  2. 2

    Museum of Modern Art exterior

Pass the second major gallery and decide whether its current exhibition should replace the outdoor loop in poor weather.

  3. 3

    Tivoli Pond

Enter the park and follow the main paths to the pond.

  4. 4

    Jakopič Promenade

Walk the broad axis and view the current outdoor exhibition if one is installed.

  5. 5

    Tivoli Mansion

Continue to the mansion and International Centre of Graphic Arts area; check current access before entering.

  6. 6

    Cekin Mansion exterior

Add the northern stop only if energy and time are comfortable.

  7. 7

    Return to the National Gallery

Loop back through the main park paths rather than climbing toward forest trails.

Fit the walk into a real trip

Use Route 1 for one day; spread all three across a longer stay

The one-, two-, and three-day guides already place these walks into sensible mornings and afternoons. Open the itinerary chooser instead of trying to stitch every route together yourself.

Ljubljana Walking Map FAQ

Which Ljubljana walking route should a first-time visitor choose?

Choose Route 1, the Old Town and Castle Essentials loop. It covers the most recognizable sights in a logical order and works especially well with the castle funicular.

Can I combine all three routes in one day?

You can connect them, but it is not the best first-day plan. Route 1 plus either the short Plečnik core or Tivoli makes a full day; save the third route for another morning.

Are these exact GPS walking routes?

No. The map is a schematic planning aid and the distances are editorial approximations between suggested stops. Use a live street map for turn-by-turn navigation and current diversions.

Are the routes wheelchair accessible?

No complete route is labeled universally accessible. Central Ljubljana is largely flat, but historic paving, slopes, temporary works, transport, and venue interiors vary. Use the reduced-mobility versions and confirm every must-have access point directly.

Do I need a car for these walks?

No. All three begin in or beside central Ljubljana. Walking, the castle funicular, Kavalir where appropriate, and occasional local transport are more useful than a car.

What is the best Ljubljana walk in rain?

Use a shortened Route 1 with the funicular and suitable castle interiors, or convert Route 2 or 3 into a museum pairing. Check current opening before setting out.
