Ljubljana Train Station is the city's main rail gateway and one of the easiest arrival points if you are staying near the center. It sits north of the old town, close enough to walk to many central hotels and directly beside the bus station area.
For visitors, the station is less about romance and more about practical timing. It can be excellent for Vienna, Zagreb, Trieste combinations, local Slovenian trips, and some Lake Bled plans, but you need to check the current departure platform and any works affecting access before you travel.
Use the train station when your route lines up naturally with Slovenian Railways or a cross-border rail operator. It is especially useful if your accommodation is north of the river, if you prefer rail comfort over buses, or if your onward city is already connected by a reasonable train pattern.
For some day trips, the train can be slower or less direct than the bus. Lake Bled, for example, requires choosing the right station and planning the last leg carefully. For Postojna, Zagreb, Vienna, and regional Slovenian towns, the train can be a good fit when the timetable works for your day.

Lake Bled for many first-time visitors, Piran and the coast, and some short day trips where bus departures are more convenient.
Many central stays are close enough for a walk. Use a taxi if you have heavy bags, late arrival, or a hotel across the river.
Buy rail tickets through official channels, at the station, or through the relevant operator for international routes. Do not assume that every temporary platform has the same ticket facilities as the main hall, especially while station works are active.
If your connection is important, arrive early enough to read the station screens, follow temporary signs, and adjust if a platform is outside the usual area. This matters more with luggage, children, or a short onward bus transfer.
The railway station and bus station form one practical transport zone. That is useful if you are comparing train and bus options, but it also means the area can feel busy at peak arrival times.
The old town is south of the station. The walk is straightforward, but the first few minutes are more functional than scenic. If you arrive late, travel alone with luggage, or stay beyond the old town, a taxi or hotel-arranged transfer can be easier.
The main railway station is north of the old town, beside the main bus station area. Many central hotels are within walking distance, though a taxi is easier with heavy luggage.
They are separate stations, but they sit next to each other in the same transport zone. This makes bus and train comparisons practical for day trips and onward routes.
Use the train when the timetable and final stop fit your route. Use the bus when it gives a more direct day-trip pattern, especially for places where the train station is not close to the attraction.
Yes. Current station works can affect platform access, so check official Slovenian Railways notices and station boards before relying on a tight connection.
